Performers are the conduits of our stage, connecting us through dance, art, flow, and voice. Dance music culture welcomes all forms of creative expression. Performers bring art to life, transcending the ordinary to evoke emotions and ignite imaginations.
Modern, continuous mix DJing was birthed from hip-hop culture. This musical subculture first emerged at block parties hosted in The Bronx, New York City in the early 1970’s. The other three stylistic performance elements include Breaking, MCing, and Graffiti. Breaking (commonly known as break dancing) was one of the earliest forms of dance that thrived alongside a DJ. Today there are many styles of expressive movement that accompany dance music. The art form has expanded to include flow toys like poi and fire spinning. MCing (i.e. rapping or more generally described as lyricism) gives dance music culture a voice and message. Graffiti was used as a visual medium to spread that message.
Dance Music Initiative is proud to include all practitioners of the original four elements as respected artists.
